National College of Ireland recently conducted a review looking at what areas are still hiring. The main growth areas include ICT, Science and Engineering, the Green Sector and Internationally Tradeable Services. Robert Ward, The National College of IrelandWhether you are looking at a complete career change or looking to survive in your current industry, education can be crucial. Our strong Celtic tiger cubs need to become adaptable to the changing environment around them, like colour changing chameleons.Whatever your situation we believe that education is key to helping you adapt to this changing world. Education can help you to get a job, keep a job or move up in your career. Getting a job – Light in the gloom.National College of Ireland recently conducted a review looking at what areas are still hiring. The main growth areas include ICT, Science and Engineering, the Green Sector and Internationally Tradeable Services.Clearly there are not enough jobs being created to replace those lost. However, looking to the future the economy trend is clear. The jobs being created will require a highly skilled labour force. There will simply be fewer jobs for those without qualifications or higher level skills. If you are currently in this group you need not despair, rather take your courage in your hands and think about upskilling yourself through education and training. Keeping a Job – Be the plus oneFor those looking to keep a job the old joke about two guys confronted by a lion springs to mind. As one puts on his jogging shoes the other remarks that he’ll never outrun the lion. To which the other retorts callously, though honestly. ‘I don’t have to outrun the lion, I have to outrun you’. Simplistic perhaps but it is true that it is an employers market. You can maximise your employability by for example doing a postgraduate qualification, or you could do a shorter course to gain a skill that your employer needs. For example could you save your employer money if you were trained in website design or basic bookkeeping? Further education can give you the little extra that makes you indispensable, the plus one! Moving up in a job – Train hard, fight easy. They say never waste a good crisis and difficult trading conditions can allow certain employees to shine. A part-time course not only teaches you new skills. The learning process and your engagement with classmates from other industries gives you a new perspective. You can see your own workplace in a new light and bring back ideas and efficiencies. In many instances people say that this engagement in itself makes them sharper in their jobs.At National College of Ireland, we believe that education changes lives. It is the most important thing you can do to survive and prosper, not just in these current recessionary times but as a way to address your own potential and to underpin self-confidence. Over the past 50+ years we have seen thousands of workers benefit from our full and part-time courses in business, computing and community studies. There are a range of choices available from postgraduate qualifications to shorter courses. We know people can be fearful of returning because of the long ‘absence’ or bad memories of ‘school’ from the past. The National College of Ireland is set up to help with open evenings throughout the summer where you can get advice on courses and careers. We also promise great support for people who do decide to come back to College to ensure your success. As the start of classes in September is just around the corner, more than ever education must be given priority. On an individual level, you owe it to yourself to realise your potential. Our open evening is on the 3rd September at 5pm, you can call on 1850 221 721 or see www.ncirl.ie. Brought to you by www.supportingcareers.ie |
