Cost of Living for Students

By Bernadette Farrell

Over the years there have been a number of surveys carried out to try and accurately estimate the cost of living for the average student. Every year there are several estimates published which give an indication of how much it costs to be a student for one academic year (nine months) in Ireland.

Living expenses will differ depending upon the location of the institution, the type of accommodation preferred and on the personal expenditure of the student. There are a number of other costs associated with studying and these include:

  • food
  • laundry
  • household bills and expenses
  • clothes
  • textbooks
  • transport & travel
  • communication
  • health care
  • extracurricular activities
  • socialising!

These costs vary form area to area and from person to person.

Figure from 2008

Estimates for the academic year vary from survey to survey and seem to rest somewhere between €7500 and €15,000. This figure can be heavily dependent on the type of accommodation you stay at.

In preparing a budget for your time in college the figures given and the examples of the types of expenditure that you may encounter may assist you.
